Ceremonial Matcha is made from shade-grown tea leaves carefully hand-picked, steamed, and then ground into a fine powder. The result is a vibrant green powder that is smooth and creamy in texture, with a rich, umami flavour.
To differentiate between ceremonial Matcha from culinary Matcha, look for the colour, texture, and aroma. Ceremonial matcha (made from the youngest leaves) is a bright, vibrant green colour with a very fine texture and a sweet, delicate aroma. Culinary matcha (made from more mature leaves) is often a darker green colour with a slightly coarser texture and a more bitter aroma.
The process of making matcha is considered an art form in Japan, with the preparation and presentation of the tea being just as important as the taste. It is often served as part of a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, known as chanoyu.
Ceremonial matcha is prized for its health benefits, which include high levels of antioxidants and L-theanine, an amino acid that promotes relaxation and mental clarity. Matcha has been linked to numerous health benefits, including high levels of antioxidants, improved brain function, increased metabolism, and lowered risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and type 2 diabetes. It is also a source of caffeine, which provides a natural energy boost without the jitters or crashes associated with coffee.
